FOR OUR BUSINESSES

The region’s coal industry is the engine room of the Mackay economy, responsible in 2018 for 43% of economic activity. It’s something we simply can’t afford to lose!

Who we are

The Resource Industry Network (RIN) is a not-for-profit, member-driven organisation connecting and promoting the region’s heavy industry and engineering businesses.

The region’s capability is evident to all who arrive in Mackay either by aircraft or by the Bruce Highway from the south.

The southern suburb of Paget, the coal port of Hay Point and Jilalan rail yards at Sarina are a multi-billion dollar testament to the importance of the Mackay region to Queensland’s #1 export industry.

Mackay is the gateway to the Bowen and Galilee Basins – both renowned for their world-class coal resources.

You will find factual information on this website about the enduring connections between the Queensland export coal industry and the Mackay region.

It’s a story that has made Mackay the envy of regional Australia for reasons including:

  • Higher than state/national average weekly incomes

  • The lowest youth unemployment rate in regional Queensland

  • The fifth most affordable housing of any city in Australia

  • A tropical lifestyle on the doorstep of the Great Barrier Reef

What we're asking

In the lead up to the 18 May 2019 Federal election, RIN members, employees and their families want to know where their political candidates stand on the future of the export coal industry, and by close association, the Mackay region.

With development of the Carmichael mine in the Galilee Basin a hot topic for the election campaign, RIN believes it essential that voters in the seat of Dawson and other North Queensland electorates have the information they need to make an informed decision about the future for their region.

That means knowing where our aspiring political representatives stand on basic questions such as:

Question 1:

Do you support companies developing new thermal and metallurgical coal mines in Australia?

YES/NO?

Question 2:

If elected, outline what your party will do to ensure mining begins in the Galilee Basin?

Question 3:

If elected, outline what your party will do to ensure the construction of a proposed railway line connecting Galilee Basin industries to the east coast network?

Question 4:

If elected, outline what your party will do to ensure Queensland is ranked as a top global mining investment destination?

As they are received by candidates for the House of Representatives and Senate, RIN will publish them on this website without alteration or comment, for the information and education of Mackay region voters.
